What characterises the blueberry?

The wild blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) belongs to the heather family and is native to the northern zones of Eurasia. The plant needs a sunny to semi-shady spot in a wind-protected position. It likes nutrient-poor soils in sparse forests, heaths and moors. Blueberries grow mainly in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, they are only found in mountainous regions.

Frequently asked questions

Blueberry and bilberry - is there a difference?

No. Depending on the region, different names are used for the berry, but it is the same fruit.

How does the forest blueberry differ from the cultivated blueberry?

Forest blueberries and cultivated blueberries belong to the same genus, but are only distantly related and differ in many ways. Forest blueberries are tastier and smaller than cultivated blueberries. In addition, the wild berries are found close to the ground in the forest. Cultivated blueberries, on the other hand, are cultivated. In addition, the fruit of the wild blueberry is smaller (up to 1 cm smaller fruit) and are dark blue to purple in colour due to the pigments they contain, the so-called anthocyanins. Cultivated blueberries have a pale flesh and therefore hardly colour at all. They also taste less aromatic.

What is the difference between Blueberry juice and Blueberry Nectar?

The forest blueberry juice consists of 100 % pure juice, while the blueberry nectar has a fruit content of at least 35 % and is enriched with water and organic cane sugar. In accordance with the law, no sugar is added to the forest blueberry pure juice from first pressing. Fruit juice naturally contains the fruit's own sugar. The Blueberry Nectar has a less intense and sweeter taste than the Blueberry pure juice.
