What makes acerola so special?

Acerola probably originates from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Although it is often called the acerola cherry, only its appearance is somewhat reminiscent of the native cherry, as the two are not related. The acerola is a stone fruit and grows 1 to 3 cm in size. It grows on small trees that thrive in humid, subtropical climates. The main cultivation areas are in Mexico, Jamaica, Florida and Brazil.

What makes acerola special is not least its very high vitamin C content, which makes it one of the most vitamin C-rich fruits of all.

Frequently asked questions

Can acerola be eaten raw?

Since acerola tastes very sour, it is rarely eaten raw. In addition, the fruits spoil quickly - already 3 to 5 days after harvesting they can no longer be used. The flesh of the acerola consists of 80 % juice. The fruits have a very thin and sensitive skin. For these reasons, acerola comes to us almost exclusively as juice.
